Types of Health Insurance Defined

Posted by admin · Leave a Comment

The world of health insurance can seem overwhelming to those who don’t work in it, but at one point or another we all have to dive and learn a little bit about the inner working of insurance policies. The basic starting point for everyone should be to learn the differences between plan types. This concept in itself can be confusing, so it is important that you start at the very beginning. It is important to know the difference between individual, group, small business and family health insurance coverage.

Individual Health Insurance
Individual health insurance is coverage that is purchased on an individual basis by one person outside of a group. This type of health insurance can be very expensive and often has a rather costly premium associated with it. This is not the ideal type of heath insurance coverage to have, but often if you loose your job or work independently it may be your only option for coverage and any coverage is better than no coverage. If you ask the company that you are thinking of getting your policy with, you may qualify for a group plan which might help reduce your rate.

Group Health Insurance
This is the most common type of health insurance that people have. Group health insurance coverage is the coverage that you receive through your work or sometimes another entity that covers you and other members you work with or that are associated with that entity. Group health insurance is beneficial because you are reaping the benefits of getting your health insurance with a number of people rather than on your own as an individual. Health insurance companies reduce the rate based on the number of people that they are signing up in a group, plus you are sharing the costs of the health insurance with a number of individuals rather than doing it on your own.

Small Business Health Insurance
Small business health insurance can encompass groups that number one individual to 99 individuals depending what state that you live in. This type of health insurance varies in price based on the number of members participating in the group. The more people that are on the plan the greater the reduction in each person’s individual premium. Even if you operate a small business it is typically more economical to purchase health insurance for everyone in that small business together as a group than it would be to do so separately.

Family Health Insurance
Family health insurance is pretty much a necessity, especially when children are young. Family health insurance can be obtained through group health insurance, or on your own. Family health insurance costs more than what people pay for individual health insurance, but each individual is paying less than they would pay if they were insured alone. However, if you get your family health insurance through your job you often pay more than individuals who are getting the insurance for themselves only.
